  • Ankle

-Ankle Sprain: An ankle sprain is a common, painful injury that occurs when one or more of the ankle ligaments is stretched beyond the normal range of motion. Sprains can occur as a result of sudden twisting, turning or rolling movements. -Ankle Arthroscopy: Ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that orthopaedic surgeons use to diagnose and treat problems in the ankle joint. When arthroscopy is performed, it is usually due to ankle damage that is caused by arthritis versus a one-time traumatic injury. Two tiny incisions are made in the patient's ankle where the arthroscopic camera and any necessary instruments can be inserted. -Total Ankle Replacement: In a total ankle replacement, the surgeon removes diseased or damaged portions of the ankle and inserts an artificial component comprised of plastic and metal. This is done to reduce pain and restore mobility for the patient.

  • Foot

-Bunions: This deformity affects the joint at the base of the big toe. It is a bony bump beneath the skin on the inner side of the foot. A bunion starts small, but over time it can grow to become very large. Bunions are more common in women. Pressure in the ball of the foot causes the bones to shift. This can be caused by high heels or shoes that are too tight or too narrow leading to arthritis in the foot. Traumatic injuries, such as fractures and strains Overuse injuries, such as stress fractures Chronic conditions and diseases, such as arthritis, diabetes, and plantar fasciitis Deformities, such as bunions and flatfoot It may be time to consult a foot specialist if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms of foot pain: Numbness in the foot Pain in the heel, ball, or arch of the foot Inability to perform daily activities without foot pain Change in sensation or color of the skin or toenails Swelling or tenderness in the foot Loss of function Deformity A consultation our foot doctor, Dr. Paul B. Maloof, is the best way to differentiate between a severe foot condition and minor foot injury.

  • Joint Replacement & Revision

-Knee Replacement: Knee replacement surgery removes degenerated cartilage from the knee joint and replaces it with implants. This is done to restore function and eliminate pain. Our physicians perform computer assisted robotic knee replacements. Robotic surgery provides the patient with increased precision and accuracy and makes the knee replacement less invasive. Hip Replacement: Hip replacement surgery removes diseased or damaged portions of the hip and replaces them with implants. This is done to restore function and mobility in the hip joint. The anterior approach to hip replacement allows the surgeon to work between the major muscle groups and preserve muscle tissue. This may minimize recovery time for the patient. Shoulder Replacement: Shoulder replacement surgery removes damaged or diseased head of the humerus (ball) and cartilage of the shoulder joint and replaces it with an implant. The surgeon joins the repaired shoulder components to form the new shoulder joint. This is done to restore function and mobility for the patient.

  • Shoulder

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our specialty-trained shoulder doctors are experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating shoulder injuries and conditions. The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint, comprised of a system of muscles and ligaments connecting the clavicle (collar bone), scapula (shoulder blade), and humerus (upper arm bone). It is the most versatile joint with the widest range of motion in the human body, and its complex structure allows for a tremendous amount of flexibility. However, this wide range of motion also introduces an increased vulnerability to injury. Typically, shoulder pain can be identified as the result of one of four root causes: instability, arthritis, inflammation, or fractures. Shoulder instability occurs when the shoulder joint becomes dislocated (the head of the humerus is forced out of the socket). Whether the result of a sudden injury or from overuse, each time the shoulder is dislocated the ligaments are stretched, making the shoulder increasingly more susceptible to repeat episodes. Shoulder arthritis is the result of wear-and-tear of the cartilage within the shoulder joint. When the layer of cartilage within the shoulder joint wears away, the bones being to rub against one another, causing inflammation and discomfort. Shoulder inflammation, often regarded as shoulder bursitis, can be considered an overuse injury. Inflammation of the shoulder is characterized by swelling of the bursa between the rotator cuff and the top of the scapula. Overuse (excessive or repetitive motions) of the shoulder is generally the cause of shoulder inflammation. Shoulder fractures are the result of traumatic incidents, such as an automobile accident or other traumatic blow to the joint. Most commonly affecting the clavicle, scapula, and upper humerus, shoulder fractures often do not require surgery. It may be time to seek treatment with a shoulder specialist if you are experiencing the following symptoms of a shoulder condition or injury: Shoulder pain and stiffness Limited range of motion Inability to reach overhead without pain Shoulder pain that disrupts sleep or keeps you awake at night A popping or grinding sensation when using the afflicted shoulder Shoulder pain can disrupt your lifestyle and significantly reduce your quality of life. So whether you’re suffering from a recent injury, such as a rotator cuff tear, or from chronic pain, such as shoulder arthritis, our shoulder doctors at Tidewater Orthopaedics understand the urgency behind your desire for pain relief.

  • Trauma

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our trauma doctors are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic injuries. Orthopaedic trauma is a specialized field of orthopaedic medicine concentrated on issues related to the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles of the entire body following a traumatic incident. Due to the dynamic nature of trauma injuries, immediate evaluation and treatment is typically required. Traumatic injuries most often involve fractures and multiple injuries, such as those sustained in accidents, falls, or high-impact collisions, and require rapid medical attention due to the potential implications of such devastating injuries. Because of their comprehensive training and years of experience, our trauma doctors are unparalleled experts in assessing and treating complex trauma injuries, such as non-healing fractures, malaligned fractures, and pelvic fractures as well as providing other relevant care to trauma victims.

  • Back

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our specialty-trained back doctor is an expert in assessing, diagnosing, and treating back injuries and conditions. Back pain can be caused by a wide array of issues involving the vertebrae. However, the vast majority of back pain symptoms are caused by inflammation due to either overuse or acute injury. Practicing proper posture and lifting techniques can help to preserve your back health and significantly reduce your risk for sustaining a back injury, such as a fracture, herniated disc, or strained muscle. Unfortunately, not all causes of back pain are as easily preventable. Pain can also arise from a chronic or progressive condition, such as degenerative disc disease, or from injuries that may occur spontaneously, such as a herniated disc. Because back pain often only worsens when left untreated, it is imperative that you seek immediate treatment from a back specialist if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms of back pain: Radiating pain from the neck to the arm/hand Radiating pain from the back to the leg/foot Back, leg, or foot pain that worsens while standing or walking and is relieved by sitting Nagging pain after episodes of heavy lifting Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs Nerve or dexterity issues in the arms and hands At Tidewater Orthopaedics, we know that pain in the back can be extremely uncomfortable, can disrupt your lifestyle, and can make everyday activities challenging. Our back doctor understands that a prompt and accurate diagnosis is critical in determining the most effective treatment plan for your individual condition.

  • Hand

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our specialty-trained hand doctors are experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating hand injuries and conditions. Pain in the hand can be caused by a wide range of issues, from a condition that has developed over time, such as carpal tunnel or arthritis, to a traumatic injury, such as a fracture or sprain. In some cases, and if not detected early, conditions such as carpal tunnel may progress and worsen, causing severe pain and even immobility in the fingers, thumb, hand, and forearm. Lingering pain in the hand is often the result of a condition that has developed over time. It may be time to seek medical treatment from a hand specialist if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: Increased hand and arm discomfort Pain in the fingers while carrying, gripping, grasping, or twisting objects Swelling and discomfort in the hand or afflicted joint Changes in range of motion in the surrounding joints (for instance, if you are experiencing thumb joint pain, your adjacent finger joints may become more mobile than usual) Warmth and/or redness in the hand, palm, and fingers Numbness, tingling, or throbbing of the hand while resting or sleeping A sensation of grating or grinding in the affected joint The development of cysts on the end joints of your fingers Our hand specialists at Tidewater Orthopaedics understand that pain in the hand can disrupt your lifestyle and make simple, everyday activities difficult. Our doctors are committed to developing customized treatment plans to accommodate your individual condition and get you back to your active lifestyle quickly and safely.

  • Knee

-Knee Replacement: Knee replacement surgery removes degenerated cartilage from the knee joint and replaces it with implants. This is done to restore function and eliminate pain. Our physicians perform computer assisted robotic knee replacements. Robotic surgery provides the patient with increased precision and accuracy and makes the knee replacement less invasive. ACL Tear: An ACL tear occurs when the ACL ligament connecting the femur and tibia becomes injured. It is often painful and causes the knee to feel unstable. An ACL tear most often occurs during athletics, but can also occur because of sudden stops, landing awkwardly, or trauma. Most often the patient will experience a popping sound at the moment the ACL tear occurs. Surgery and rehabilitation are commonly required. Meniscus Tear: A meniscus tear is a common injury within the knee. Each side of the knee has cartilage providing cushion called the meniscus. Physical activity, rotating, kneeling, squatting, and the aging process can all attribute to a meniscus tear. Patients may experience a popping sound, trouble straightening the leg, and pain. Rest, ice, medication, and physical therapy can help. If pain persists, surgery will be recommended.

  • Spine

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our specialty-trained spine doctor is an expert in assessing, diagnosing, and treating spine injuries and conditions. The spine is a highly complex and crucial structure in the human body, comprised of muscles, bones (or vertebrae), tendons, ligaments, and sensitive nerves. The spine protects the spinal cord while providing, support, strength, and flexibility. Maintaining a healthy spine is vital to living an active lifestyle. However, the spine’s ability to offer support and flexibility simultaneously introduces an increased risk for injury. Due to its unique structure and its proximity to the spinal cord, injuries of the spine can affect any appendage of the human body. Symptoms that may indicate the presence of a spine injury are wide-ranging and may seem unexpected or seemingly unrelated. Causes of spine conditions are also wide-ranging and abundant, as they can affect the bones, nerves, muscles, or tendons. For this reason, an accurate diagnosis made by a spine specialist is a crucial prerequisite to determining a course of treatment. Additionally, many spine conditions worsen over time, often exacerbating pain and causing further damage. Therefore, it is imperative to seek immediate treatment with a spine specialist if you suspect you are suffering from a spine condition or injury.

  • Wrist

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our specialty-trained wrist doctors are experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating wrist injuries and conditions. The wrist is a complex joint that bridges the bones, ligaments, and muscles of the hand to those of the forearm. Pain in the wrist is quite common, but identifying the source of it can be difficult, as there are a multitude of injuries and conditions that can cause wrist pain. Wrist pain can be the result of a condition that has developed over time or from overuse injuries like tendonitis (medically referred to as tendinitis), carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthritis, or as the result of an injury from an accidental fall or recent sports injury, such as a fracture or sprain. Though often associated with sudden or acute injuries, such as sprains or fractures, wrist pain can also be brought on by more long-term issues, such as repetitive stress or overuse, arthritis, or carpal tunnel syndrome. With regard to chronic conditions, such as tendonitis (medically referred to as tendinitis) and carpal tunnel, your pain and discomfort may significantly worsen, if left untreated. This may implicate wrist surgery as a viable treatment option to relieve pain and restore function to your wrist.

  • Elbow

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our specialty-trained elbow doctors are experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating elbow injuries and conditions. The elbow is one of the largest joints in the body, connecting the bones of the forearm (radius and ulna) to the upper arm bone (humerus) through a network of ligaments and muscles. Offering structure and durability, the elbow also allows for a great deal of range of motion. However, because it is one of the most frequently exercised and most stressed joints, it is also prone to injury, such as hyperextension and fractures, as well as orthopaedic conditions, such as osteoarthritis and bursitis.

  • Hip

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our specialty-trained hip doctors are experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating hip injuries and conditions. The hip is a ball-and-socket joint connecting the head of the femur (upper thigh bone) to the bones that make up the pelvis. Hip pain can be caused by a wide range of issues, from a progressive condition that has developed over time, such as bursitis and arthritis, to an acute injury, such as a fracture or dislocation. If left untreated, cases involving inflammatory or degenerative diseases, like hip bursitis and hip osteoarthritis, can cause severe pain and immobility, and surgery may be introduced as a viable option for relieving pain and restoring mobility. While hip pain can be the result of trauma or acute injury, it most commonly arises in conjunction with an orthopaedic condition that has developed over time.

  • Neck

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our specialty-trained neck doctor is an expert in assessing, diagnosing, and treating neck injuries and conditions. The neck is a complex system of muscles, nerves, and vertebral bones confined in a small space, making it vulnerable to damage and injury. Pain can be caused by a myriad of orthopaedic issues, including abnormalities in the bones or joints, traumatic injuries, poor posture, degenerative diseases, and muscle strains.

  • Sports Medicine

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, our sports medicine doctors are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries and conditions. Sports medicine is a specialized branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries and conditions. Regardless of age, sport, or ability level, athletes and active individuals alike depend on a healthy musculoskeletal system to perform at their highest aptitude. However, when a sports-related injury occurs, it can take you out of the game for days, weeks, or even months at a time, dependent upon its severity. Injuries and musculoskeletal pain are common occurrences in the sports community because athletes redefine their limits by pushing their bodies to physical exhaustion during training, practice, and competition.
