  • Loel Z. Payne, MD, FAAOS

    Shoulder & Knee

    Dr. Loel Payne has been with Tidewater Orthopaedics since 1995 and has built a superior reputation for his care of shoulder and knee problems. Dr. Payne attended undergraduate school at Duke University and medical school at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He completed his residency and internship at Yale University before completing his fellowship training in shoulder surgery and sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee, total joint replacement (shoulder & knee), Bankart repair, rotator cuff repair, ACL repair, PRP injections, and various other conditions related to the shoulder and knee including trauma. Dr. Loel Payne has been with Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton, VA for over 20 years, having joined the practice in 1995. His approach to treating patients is to provide the most up-to-date specialized care available and the compassion he would want administered to a member of his own family. He specializes in the elbow, knee, and shoulder and is known around the practice as the “shoulder guy.” Dr. Payne was born in North Carolina where he played basketball throughout his youth. Through sports, he had the opportunity to witness sports injuries treated by local orthopaedic surgeons; he was fascinated by the ability of those injured to return to sports. Dr. Payne majored in biomedical engineering at Duke University, where he played one semester for the Duke Blue Devils basketball team under Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) before attending medical school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. For his postgraduate training, Dr. Payne was awarded a spot in the orthopaedic residency program at Yale School of Medicine. Following, he did his fellowship training in shoulder surgery and sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, New York. While completing his fellowship, Dr. Payne had the opportunity to work with the New York Mets. Shoulder and knee doctor, Loel Z. Payne, M.D., sees patients in Hampton, VA as well as Williamsburg, VA. Nothing makes Dr. Payne happier than seeing a patient who was in restricting pain resume the things they love to do. In his spare time, Dr. Payne loves to spend quality time with his family, which includes a spring break trip every year.     Dr. Kingston specialized in hips, knees, sports medicine, and joint replacement. Originally from Long Island New York, he has been with Tidewater Orthopaedics since 2003. A proud former member of the Unites States Air Force, Dr. Kingston was a flight surgeon and orthopedic surgeon during operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. During his years in the military, he attended medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, and residency at the Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium in San Antonio, Texas. He specializes in arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine injuries, total joint replacement (hip & knee), ACL repair, rotator cuff repair, meniscal repair, PRP and Stem Cell injections, and conditions of the hip, knee, and shoulder including trauma. Dr. Colin Kingston, originally from Long Island, New York, has been with Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton, VA since 2003. A proud former member of the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Kingston was a flight surgeon and an orthopaedic surgeon during operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. While in medical school and in the U.S. Air Force, he enjoyed playing rugby. Prior to joining the military, Dr. Kingston earned his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Albany. Currently, he is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, among others. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has a subspecialty certificate in orthopaedic sports medicine. Knee and sports medicine doctor, Colin M. Kingston, M.D., sees patients in Hampton, VA and Williamsburg, VA. Dr. Kingston lives in Yorktown with his wife and their two kids.     Dr. Campolattaro, an expert in the field of hand and wrist surgery, has been with Tidewater Orthopaedics since September 2004. He began his career attending the College of William & Mary for undergraduate school and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey for medical school. Dr. Campolattaro completed his residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry before completing his fellowship training in hand surgery at Wake Forest University. He specializes in conditions related to the hand and wrist including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, arthritic joint reconstruction, fractures/sprains, complex traumas, and cubital tunnel syndrome. Dr. Robert Campolattaro has been with Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton, Virginia since 2004 and serves as the president of the practice. He is fellowship-trained by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in hand and upper extremity surgery and is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He also holds a subspecialty certificate in surgery of the hand. Dr. Campolattaro was drawn to orthopaedic surgery because of the intellectual challenge and intricacy of surgical techniques, as well as the meaningful interpersonal contact of the profession. He began his career in Williamsburg at the College of William & Mary, where he completed his bachelor of science degree.     Dr. Higgins, a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery, joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in 2006. He obtained his medical degree from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, and did his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at The State University of New York, Buffalo. He went on to complete a one-year fellowship in total joint replacement surgery at the Roanoke Orthopaedic Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Dr. Higgins performs computer-navigated and robotic-assisted knee replacements and direct anterior approach hip surgery (“jiffy hip”). He specializes in total joint replacement (hip & knee), ACL repair, meniscal repair, and various other conditions relating to the hip and knee including trauma. Dr. Michael Higgins, born and raised in Buffalo, New York, joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton, VA in 2006 and is a board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and fellowship-trained by the American Acaedemy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in hip and knee replacement specialist. He believes practicing orthopaedic surgery and serving his patients is a privilege, a philosophy he learned from his mentors throughout his orthopaedic training. Dr. Higgins began his training at The State University of New York at Geneseo, where he earned his undergraduate degree before continuing on to medical school at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Higgins completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Buffalo University, The State University of New York, and an additional year of specialty training focused on complex hip and knee replacement at the Roanoke Orthopaedic Center in Roanoke, Virginia. The most rewarding aspects of his practice are fixing or reconstructing orthopaedic problems, whether simple or very complex, and restoring mobility in his patients so they can continue to live active and fulfilling lifestyles.     Dr. Smerlis, an expert in the field of hand and wrist surgery. He joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in 2007 after completing his fellowship training in hand surgery at Wake Forest University. Prior to his fellowship experience, Dr. Smerlis attended University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry for his residency and internship and the University of Maryland School of Medicine for medical school. He specializes in conditions related to the hand and wrist, including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, arthritic joint reconstruction, fractures/sprains, complex traumas, and cubital tunnel syndrome. Dr. Smerlis grew up in the small town of Damascus, Maryland, where his father was a local dentist. As a child, he would help his dad on various projects as the “go for.” These experiences tinkering with tools evolved into a passion working with his hands. Growing up in a small town, he appreciated the relationships his father developed with patients and wanted to pursue a similar career. With the encouragement of his parents, he decided not to follow his father’s footsteps and instead, pursue a career in medicine. He felt surgery would challenge him to push the foundation set by his father. During medical school, he worked with an established hand surgeon at the Veterans Administration Hospital and loved the anatomy and technical demands of hand surgery. As well, the camaraderie of orthopaedics drove him to this specialty. Upon completion of fellowship training, he moved his family to Hampton Roads in 2007 to join Tidewater Orthopaedics to build a subspecialty practice in hand surgery. Today, Tidewater Hand Specialists serve the Virginia Peninsula with the only two board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, orthopaedic surgeons with further subspecialty certification in hand surgery. In his free time, Dr. Smerlis enjoys spending time with his wife, Maureen, and their two children, Nicholas and Alexis. Aside from watching the kids play sports, he enjoys playing Xbox with his son and taking his daughter to horseback riding lessons. Since an early age, he has loved snow skiing and even worked one year at Vail loading chairs and skiing 100 days that season. His family has grown to love the sport too. Dr. Smerlis continues to hone his skills with various projects around the house.

  • Nicholas K. Sablan, MD

    Sports Medicine & Shoulder

    Dr. Nicholas Sablan joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in the fall of 2011 after having completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Connecticut, and a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Kerlan Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, Dr. Sablan served as assistant team physician to the Lakers, LA Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Dodgers, and PGA Tour. He currently is the head team physician at Hampton University and is a consultant for William & Mary. He is closely involved with many of the local Hampton Roads high schools. His goal is to help relieve the pain and return the function of all athletes, from the weekend warrior to the serious athlete. He specializes in both the operative and non-operative management of sports injuries, focusing on shoulder, knee, and elbow problems. He specializes in total joint replacement (shoulder), ACL repair, rotator cuff repair, Bankart repair, ACL repair, meniscal repair, trauma, and injuries related to sports medicine. Dr. Nicholas Sablan joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton, VA in 2011, after he completed his fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine. As a member of the Tidewater Orthopaedics team, he shares our same commitment to providing excellent subspecialty care. Dr. Sablan received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, before continuing on to earn his doctor of medicine degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, New York. For postgraduate training, he completed his residency at the University of Connecticut in Farmington and his fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, California. He served as administrative chief resident in one of the busiest Level I trauma centers on the East Coast. He completed his fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery at Duke University. Dr. Maloof brings many cutting-edge treatments to Hampton Roads as the only full-time orthopedic surgeon with an M.D. in the region specializing in comprehensive, complex foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Maloof is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and specializes in total ankle replacement, flatfoot deformity correction, complex fracture care of the foot and ankle, bunions, hammertoes, non-unions, osteomyelitis, tendon ruptures, deformity correction, ankle arthroscopy, workplace injuries, sports injuries of the foot and ankle, and complex infections, as well as many other conditions of the foot and ankle. Dr. Paul Maloof, board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a foot and ankle doctor from Bergen County, New Jersey, joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in 2013. His choice to become an orthopaedic surgeon was inspired by a pediatrician, and his favorite part of his work is being able to change the quality of life of his patients in a very meaningful way. Dr. Maloof began his path to orthopaedic surgery at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, where he completed his undergraduate work. After spending three years in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Dr. Maloof attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey for his medical doctorate and residency. While there, he served as administrative chief resident in one of the busiest Level I trauma centers on the east coast. Dr. Maloof then completed his fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Maloof brings many advanced treatments to Tidewater Orthopaedics as the only full-time foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon in the region specializing in complex and comprehensive foot and ankle care, both surgical and nonsurgical. He aims to treat his patients in the most conservative manner, reserving surgery only for cases when nonsurgical management is no longer an option. Foot and ankle doctor, Paul B.     Dr. Jonathan Mason, a Norfolk, Virginia, native, returned to Hampton Roads to join the team of sub-specialists at Tidewater Orthopaedics. He completed his residency training at the University of Virginia and his fellowship training at Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Mason performs minimally invasive outpatient spine surgery at the COASC and treats spine problems including cervical and lumbar herniated discs, cervical and lumbar stenosis, lumbar spondylolisthesis, and scoliosis. He specializes in Minimally Invasive & Open Spine Surgery (MIS), Cervical Laminectomy & Fusion, MIS Cervical Foraminotomy, Anterior Cervical Fusion & Disc Replacement, Lumbar Microdiskectomy, Minimally Invasive Lumbar Spine Fusion for Stenosis with Spondylolithesis, Navigated Spine Surgery, MIS lateral spine surgery, Spinal Cord Stimulation, X-ray Guided Epidural Cortisone Injections, Thoracic Surgery, Metastatic Spine Tumors, Scoliosis and Kyphosis Correction, and Sacroiliac Joint Treatment.     Dr. Robert Mason joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in 2018. He is fellowship-trained by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in hand and upper extremity surgery. He attended the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree. After medical school, Dr. Mason completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY. Then he completed an additional year of training with a focus on upper extremity surgery, shoulder to hand, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. He specializes in Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Elbow Bursitis, Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow), Osteoaerthritis of the Shoulder, Rotator Cuff Tear, SLAP Tear, Subacromial Bursitis, Basil Joint Osteoarthritis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Dupuytren’s Disease, and Trigger Digit. Dr. Robert Mason joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in 2018. He is fellowship-trained by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in hand and upper extremity surgery. Dr. Mason chose orthopaedics because of his hobbies, carpentry and home improvements, and he could not think of a better career to tie his attention to details with his ability to return patients to activities they enjoy. He respects his patients’ desires and strives to provide them the ability to meet their goals. Dr. Mason will be seeing patients at both the Hampton and Williamsburg locations. Dr. Mason was born and raised in the small town of Malone, NY. He started his training at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY earning a bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering. His first career was in the manufacturing industry where he worked for several years. He returned to Clarkson to earn a Masters in Engineering and Global Operations Management. During this time, his wife became a nurse and he was exposed to the medical field. At that point he realized he had missed his calling and decided to leave the field of manufacturing behind to attend medical school. He attended the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree. After medical school, Dr. Mason completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY. Then he completed an additional year of training with a focus on upper extremity surgery, shoulder to hand, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. Dr. Mason currently lives in Poquoson, VA with his wife, two children and their husky. He enjoys spending time with his family, whether it is at the beach, watching a movie or playing/watching sports with their children. In his spare time he enjoys many activities such as basketball, football, baseball, golf, and fishing as well as working on various home improvement projects.
